Lady Lion makes history

Competing on a professional level isn’t easy. Getting there is no walk in the park either. Asheika Alexander has faced many obstacles on her journey to the WNBA and still has more to do. Alexander is a senior broadcast journalism student at Langston University. She played two seasons which totals 42 games for Langston.

“For us to make it there to the championship as well as the nationals, it was history in itself. We are the  first HBCU from the conference to go” said Alexander.

Langston University is the only HBCU competing in the Sooner athletic conference. This season the Lady Lions made it to the NAIA national tournament but sadly lost to Loyola University (71-64).

The Lady Lions weren’t able to get the win, but that doesn’t mean Alexander is done. She has since signed to the Minnesota Lynx training camp roster.

“It’s a surreal feeling. I’m just blessed to be there and to have still play the game I love after college” said Alexander.

According to the Lynx Pr team, Alexander is the first player signed by the Lynx who attended an HBCU. She will also be the sixth player to have been drafted to the WNBA from a HBCU. Alexander will report to the Lynx training camp by Aug. 18,2021.
